Earning Value from Social Media with Integration

Last week I gave a WOMMA seminar that I thought I would share with you. I chose to focus on integrating social media because quite literally I have participated in half a dozen pitches in the last year, across a wide variety of verticals (CPG, Pharma, Fashion, Technology) all asking for the same thing: a global social media operations model (including policy, protocols and plan for implementation). In each of the pitches, the barriers were the same despite the varying size of the organization: little investment, small start-up group within the company, no idea where to start, lots of suggestions/recommendations from agency partners or consultants, but no rock-solid approach, and little insight on how to create buy-in.

In the last few short months, I've had the benefit of talking with CMOs and agency leads, as well as business heads in customer service, NPD, and eCommerce and it occurred to me--everyone has a stake in seeing social media succeed--and though it should be marketing-lead, social media is an enterprise-wide endeavor.

The key to unlocking social media's potential is to be somewhat altruistic--to find a way to realize value for every part of your business, not just your own.
